When Writing Or Speaking Learn That Less Is More | SQLRockstar ...

If I were you, I wouldn?t dare interrupt him.

Big words and long sentences will likely not serve you well as a writer. When it comes to making presentations the same holds true: don?t ramble on hoping to find the words that will have everyone in the room thinking you are the smartest person to ever grace their presence.

I?ve learned a few things along the way. First: use short sentences when writing. Second, eliminate the ?jelly? when writing and when speaking. Third, it?s hard to do those first two things when you are told to ?write naturally, as if you were speaking? and you tend to ramble anyway like your whole life is one long run-on sentence. But I digress?

I came across the following two links recently and so I wanted to share them with you.

First we have a link to a memo written by David Ogilvy to his employees titled ?How to Write? and it was a list of tips that included the following gems:

  • Use short words, short sentences and short paragraphs.
  • Never use jargon words like?reconceptualize,?demassification, attitudinally,?judgmentally. They are hallmarks of a pretentious ass.
  • If it is something important, get a colleague to improve it.
  • If you want ACTION,?don?t write. Go and?tell?the guy what you want.

This isn?t the first time I have heard suggestions about how writing should be kept to short sentences. The most notable reference example I have been told about came from Hemingway. I believe that he knew a thing or two about writing, especially the whole ?write drunk, edit sober? part.

Second we have a link to an article about presentations, ?In Presentations, Learn To Say Less?. This post ties well to the earlier reference I had to the jelly effect: focus on the important details when speaking to someone. Eliminate the jelly. The classic example is when you describe your company to someone and the first thing you say is ?we were founded in 1986?. Nobody cares when you were founded. Nintendo was founded in 1889 but didn?t start making video games until the mid 1970?s and OMG nobody cares about any of that. They only want to know when the next game will be released so stop wasting their time!

The article has some nice points that I have been using when putting together my outlines like I am doing for TechEd at the moment:

  • Work backwards. Start with the key points and fill in the details on how to get to the key points.
  • Practice your presentation without slides. This will help with your delivery, especially with transitions.
  • Imagine the questions that your audience may ask.

If you learn to write less it will also translate to your presentation style. This will help you be an effective communicator, someone who others will want to read more frequently, or attend your presentations more often.

Protect Your Most Vital Business Asset with Security Software ...

Homeland security, airport security, Internet security ?EUR? these

days we?EUR(TM)re literally inundated with a need to protect ourselves

and our property from the non-stop bombardment of potentially

damaging attacks by unknown sources and entities lurking

somewhere out there.

This is the reality of the world in which we live today. We can?EUR(TM)t

just lock ourselves up in our homes and wish the problems away.

Life must go on. What we?EUR(TM)ve got to do is fight back. And we have

to protect ourselves the best way that we can.

Fortunately, security is big business these days. There really is

no end to the security options that are available on the free

market. And when it comes to protecting your computer system,

your options are limited only by the balance in your checking

account.

So much of our non-sleep time is spent on the computer. Think about

your own situation. If you?EUR(TM)re running a small business,

especially when you?EUR(TM)re just starting out, the PC often is your

only other partner in the office. You entrust this partner with

every crucial component of your business ?EUR? your accounting, your

inventory, your CRM, your communication, your vital documents,

your sales and marketing information, your project management,

even your on-line store.

You?EUR(TM)re handing off quite a lot of responsibility to this partner.

Granted, it?EUR(TM)s a machine, and it?EUR(TM)s got the internal capacity to

handle such an enormous responsibility. But even the most

powerful of personal computers is vulnerable if it?EUR(TM)s not given

the protection it needs to survive in this world of never-ending

assault.

Viruses, hackers, SPAM, pop-ups, Trojans and more are out there

lurking, waiting to bring each and every unprotected computer

system to its knees.

And you might not realize this, but there are programs out there

that can log your keystrokes. Don?EUR(TM)t understand the implications

of this? Well, every time you enter your login name, your

passwords, your credit card numbers, loggers capture and store

the keystroke sequence. If you ever find unauthorized

transactions on your credit cards, your account numbers might

very well have been stolen by someone using a keystroke logger.

Have you provided your business partner with the protection it

needs to withstand this type of daily attack? You better hope

your answer is yes. Otherwise, you?EUR(TM)re playing a dangerous game of

Russian Roulette.

A good Internet security system will keep your business and

personal data safe. It will thwart viruses before they have an

opportunity to wreak havoc on your computers. It will guard

against unauthorized users, a.k.a. hackers and phishers ?EUR? those

whose sole purpose is to steal your identity. It will be able to

recognize and filter out SPAM. And those annoying pop-up ads?

They?EUR(TM)ll be blocked before they even have a chance to rear their

ugly heads.

When you need even more protection, it?EUR(TM)s available, too. Encrypt

your instant messages and keep Instant Messaging spam, or SPIM,

at bay. Internet security software can also provide you will a

listing of all web contacts, inbound as well as outbound, and

will notify you of instances of unauthorized access. Plus, it can

filter e-mail scripts and perform other tasks to help your

computer system hide from Internet scanners.

So, if you?EUR(TM)ve not done so already, it?EUR(TM)s time you purchase an

Internet security suite for your computer system. Register it so

that you get updates the moment they are available. But don?EUR(TM)t get

too comfortable. Remember, even the most advanced Internet

security suite can only guard against known enemies. And new ways

of assaulting your computer are being conceived every day. And

that?EUR(TM)s the reality of the world in which we live.

The irony of Chinese sports

By stem and root and branch we trace, by feather, fang and fur,
How the living things that are descend from things that were.
The moss, the kelp, the zebrafish, the very mice and flies,
These tiny, humble, wordless things---how shall they tell us lies?
We are kin to beasts; no other answer can we bring.
The truth has left its fingerprints on every living thing.

Colored ContactsNon Prescription Colored Contacts: Harder to Find Than You Think

If you think that it is easy to get your hands on contact lenses without a prescription then you need to think again. The fact of the matter is that it is quite difficult to get contacts without first consulting your doctor. To that end, it is even more difficult to get non prescription colored contacts than it is to get ones that are not colored. Here is the bottom line- it is hard to get non prescription colored contacts. However, it can be done if you know what to do and if you know where to look.

The easiest way for you to get the non prescription colored contacts that you want to purchase is by consulting your eye doctor. Even though the lenses you are looking for are non prescription, they will most likely be able to point you in the right direction. Most eye doctors will have relationships with vendors that sell non prescription color contact lenses. If you have a good relationship with your eye doctor then there is a chance that they will do all that they can for you by contacting someone that they know in the industry. The end result is that you will be able to buy the non prescription colored contacts that you want from a person that you have grown to trust.

If you would rather not talk to your eye doctor about it then you can always check around on the internet. There are websites out there that will sell non prescription lenses to people that are in need of them. It should be noted, however, that it is important to check the reputation of a website before you buy contacts from them. You do not want to put something in your eye that could be potentially harmful. If you decide to buy non prescription colored lenses on the internet make sure that you are dealing with a reputable company that only sells products that are safe for the end user.

A final way to locate non-prescription contacts is to ask around to people that you know who may have non prescription lenses. There is nothing like word of mouth- if you find someone that knows where to get the non prescription lenses that you are after then you can go ahead and make the purchase. It is not always easy, however, to find someone that you know who wears these non prescription lenses. To that end, this way of locating the lenses may be harder than it sounds.

Non Prescription Colored Contacts

Your best bet is to just speak with your eye doctor about what your wants and needs are in terms of colored contact lenses. They will either help you or try to talk you out of getting the lenses altogether. Regardless of what happens, you will have peace of mind knowing that you have consulted a professional that has the best interest of your eyes and your eye health in mind. This makes it worth it in the end.

More info about Non Prescription Colored Contacts can be found at Aloha Colored Contacts. They have extremely knowledgeable and helpful support that can help you pick the perfect Non Prescription Colored Contacts to match your personality and style.

'Heroic' ICE agent praised for swift actions

The ICE agent hailed for his "heroic actions" in shooting dead a colleague who opened fire on his supervisor as they talked about his job performance has been identified as Perry Woo.

CBS Los Angeles said Woo had been named by authorities and spoke to a neighbor who told the station that she was "very proud" of him.

Earlier Claude Arnold, special agent in charge for ICE/Homeland Security Investigations in Los Angeles, said that the injured supervisor, Kevin Kozak, 51, who was shot six times, was still alive because of Woo.

"Agent Kozak is alive today because of the heroic actions of a third ICE supervisor," Arnold said, according to CBS. "While that agent's quick thinking saved Agent Kozak?s life, it also meant one of his colleagues died."

Susan Varjuknupson, told the station that she was "very proud he's my neighbor."

"If we ever have any trouble, I'm going to knock on his door and make sure that he's the one that has the gun," she added.

'Refused to succumb'
NBC Los Angeles reported Friday that the gunman, named as special agent Ezequiel Garcia, 45, started shooting while being counseled on his performance by Kozak, the deputy special agent in charge of the Los Angeles area, on Thursday just before 6 p.m. local time (9 p.m. ET).

Kozak was shot six times with bullets hitting his upper torso, legs and hands, but was described Friday as alert and talking in hospital.

"He is a fighter, and I believe that's why he's alive today," Arnold said. "He refused to succumb to his injuries and in law enforcement that's what makes the difference between people who go home at the end of the day and those who don't."

Video: Federal agent killed in shootout (on this page)

Arnold said he wasn't aware of any issues between Garcia and Kozak. "We are doing everything humanly possible to understand why it happened and to ensure it will not happen again," he said.

A federal official with knowledge of the investigation told The Associated Press that Kozak had denied a request for an internal transfer request by Garcia. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to discuss the investigation publicly.

ICE routinely reallocates resources in line with priorities, but does not disclose information about transfers due to security reasons, ICE spokeswoman Virginia Kice said.

Calm, decisive
Before Woo was named, The Associated Press reported that he had been placed on administrative leave.

ICE Director John Morton said he met with the agent and described him as doing "remarkably well under the circumstances."

"This agent acted with extraordinary calm and took quick and decisive steps to deal with a very dangerous situation," Morton said.

"Both of these men came to work yesterday never imagining if they would literally be fighting for their lives, but that is exactly what in fact happened, and they were tested in a very dangerous way and showed incredible fortitude," said Morton.

CBS Los Angeles reported that Woo was a celebrated agent who was known for his work in helping to find lost children.

The traditional seas of scientific practice were once commanded by solitary captains in disciplinary ships. However, the nature of scientific practice has changed significantly in the 21st century. Collaborations now draw singular H.M.S. Pinafores into interdisciplinary armadas armed to address complex, cross-cutting problems in health, energy, agriculture, education and conservation.

So how does an agency, a foundation, a policy maker or an institution judge individual contribution in this rising tide of collaborative efforts? And should existing evaluation tools still in fact be centered on traditional individual reward mechanisms?

Arizona State University scientist James Collins examines how the transformation in scientific practice affects the business of how science is done in his opening talk for the AAAS Symposium "Successful interdisciplinary collaboration: Insights from practice and theory" from 8:30-11:30 a.m. on Friday, Feb. 17.

"Thinking about the goals of science and how interdisciplinary, collaborative approaches can help to achieve them is an important challenge to the standard independent investigator model of scientific practice," says Collins, who is the Virginia M. Ullman Professor of Natural History and the Environment in ASU's School of Life Sciences. "These talks will address the broader implications of such transformations, not only for scientists but for educators, funding agencies and foundations, science policy makers, and the broader public, and strategies for increasing the rewards of shared knowledge production."

In addition to Collins, five speakers address the implications of collaborative approaches to scientific study, from the need for organizational restructuring and the sociological underpinnings of interdisciplinary synthesis, to the impacts of differing values and goals and lessons learned through existing cooperative research centers and the "Sea Around Us" project.

Symposium speakers include Collins, Daniel Pauly (University of British Columbia); Irwin Feller (AAAS); Stephanie Pfirman (Barnard College), Michele Lamont (Harvard University), Denis Gray (North Carolina State University). The session was organized by Melanie Roberts and Edward Derrick with AAAS Science and Policy Programs, who is moderator.

"The challenge going forward is creating environments for individuals and institutions that foster interdisciplinary innovation within cultures adapted to reward disciplinary excellence," says Collins. "One outcome of this session would be examples of what makes for successful collaborations and how we might use such things as electronic communication and information resources to tackle the complex problems of the 21st century on a global scale through international, interdisciplinary efforts."

Professor James Collins joined the School of Life Sciences in ASU's College of Liberal Arts and Sciences in 1975. After surviving sectarian mob, Egyptian Christians expelled from village (The Christian Science Monitor)

Sharbat, Egypt ? Ten-year-old Romany sits in the same room where his family huddled together nearly three weeks ago, afraid for their lives, as a violent mob attacked their house.

His family had fled to this room on the top floor, where pictures of Jesus and Coptic saints hang on bare cement walls. His parents dragged heavy furniture to the door, barricading it as they heard people try to break in below. The mob was throwing rocks at the windows, and he heard gunfire, says Romany. They were cursing Christians.

?We kept praying that God would be with us,? says the fourth-grader. ?And He was.?

As the mob set fire to the home of a Christian family across the street, Muslim neighbors saved Romany?s family, hustling them out of their house by a back entrance, into a car, and out of the village, until it was safe enough to return.

LIST: How Christians are faring in 7 Middle Eastern countries

The violence in Sharbat began as many sectarian conflicts in Egypt do ? with rumors of an affair between a Christian man and a Muslim woman. It ended with eight Christian families forced to leave the village, their property and belongings left to be sold on their behalf by a local committee. The punishment for those who looted and burned Christian properties? None.

The decision was the outcome of a ?reconciliation meeting,? in which the fate of the accused is determined by locals rather than the law. The meetings have long been used in Egypt to handle sectarian conflicts, leaving victims little recourse. Hosni Mubarak may have been ousted a year ago, but methods haven't changed. Members of Egypt?s new Islamist-dominated parliament sat in on some of the Sharbat meetings, effectively sanctioning the use of extrajudicial means.

Ishak Ibrahim, a researcher for the Egyptian Initiative for Personal Rights (EIPR) who wrote a report on the incident, says that political parties must set a new precedent for dealing with sectarian tensions by applying the law in this case.

?If Islamic parties, and all parties, insisted on applying the law, and don?t accept the results of these reconciliation meetings ? if we do that, I think it may have a positive effect on sectarian incidents,? he says. ?Because one would know if he torched or destroyed houses or shops of Christians, he will go to court and be charged.?

Refusing to stand up for justice for Christian victims in Sharbat, by contrast, could have dangerous implications for future religious strife in Egypt, which is home to the Middle East?s largest Christian population.

'They were looking for a reason to attack Christians'Sharbat is a small village near the western edge of the fertile Nile delta. Along potholed streets, hand-painted signs for the salafi Nour Party cover the cement shelters of bus stops, fences, shops, and the walls of homes.

Samir Rashad, Romany?s father, says the recent violence in Sharbat was not the first case of tension between Christians and what he calls radical Muslims there. But it was the worst. It started with rumors that a local Christian man had photos or videos showing him in a sexual relationship with a local Muslim woman.

pagebreak

The man surrendered to police, and no images were found. But on Jan. 27 a large crowd gathered in front of his father?s home. Armed with rocks, Molotov cocktails, and guns, they stomped on wooden crosses and shouted about defending the honor of Islam, says Rashad, who lives just across the alley.

They soon began attacking Christian homes and shops in Sharbat. At least three Christian homes were completely destroyed after crowds lit them on fire, and at least 10 shops owned by Christians were looted, including Rashad?s tailoring shop. Some were burned.

Amid the attacks, the son of local Christian businessman Abskharon Suleiman fired a gun, in what Mr. Suleiman says was an attempt to scare off the attackers who looted and burned his shops and his family?s homes. No one was shot. According to EIPR?s report, security forces only intervened hours later, though village leaders had called them when the violence began.

Rashad says there are many honorable Muslims in the village and some intervened to save Christian families like his. But he blamed the violence on radicals. ?This was just an excuse for them to generalize everything against Christians and say we want to get them out of the village,? he says. ?Those radical Muslims have been meaning to do something like that. They were looking for a reason to attack the Christians.?

How the Christians' punishment was determinedIn the wake of the violence, several reconciliation councils convened, attended by elected representatives from the Nour party. Lawmakers from Muslim Brotherhood?s Freedom and Justice Party (FJP) also attended some councils. Some of the councils were overseen by police and governorate officials.

They first agreed to expel the man who supposedly had the affair, along with his father, his brother, and their families from the village. But, angered by the Suleiman family?s use of a gun, another mob burned another home. A subsequent reconciliation meeting decided that Suleiman, his four sons, and their families would also leave. The committee, led by a local salafi sheikh, would sell their belongings for them and pass the proceeds to the Suleimans.

EIPR says those meetings were illegal, because the law demands a criminal investigation into arson. Those who sponsored the agreement, says EIPR, ?flagrantly violated the law.? A document that details the terms of Suleiman?s departure says that the sheikh will be responsible for finding those who attacked Christian homes.

Parliament begins investigatingTwo and a half weeks after the incident, on Feb. 13, the speaker of Egypt?s parliament tasked the human rights committee with investigating it. But secular lawmaker Emad Gad said he had asked the speaker, FJP?s Saad El Katatni, to take action nearly a week before and was ignored until the issue was picked up by local media.

In a recent TV interview, a Nour party spokesman said that it contradicts Islamic law to evict Christians from the village, but said salafis intervened to keep bloodshed from happening in the village.

Ahmed Gad, an FJP member of parliament from Alexandria who visited Sharbat after the violence, says the party supports applying the law in such situations. But he also says it is normal, in rural areas, for families to resolve disputes through reconciliation meetings. ?Most of them are Bedouins, and this is how Bedouins solve things,? he says.

Ahmed Gad says no families were forced to leave the village except those allegedly involved in the inter-religious affair, and that the incidents in Sharbat were not sectarian. He accuses Suleiman of igniting violence, and said he left the village voluntarily. ?The one who caused the problem was Abu Suleiman,? as he is known in the village. ?Abu Suleiman put himself in this situation, and he left because he?s the reason that things have gotten worse after he and his sons shot at people with their machine guns,? he says. ?If Abu Suleiman wants to come back to the village, he can come back today.?

Suleiman: I didn't have a choiceSuleiman, who looks the part of a village patriarch, with a carefully grown mustache and traditional dress, says he didn?t really have a choice. He also looks weary as he tells his story in the traditional reception room of the Muslim family outside Sharbat who took in him and his family. He said the council told him that if he and his family didn?t leave the village, the violence would continue. ?I agreed to leave to prevent violence,? he says.

An FJP statement Feb. 12 said ?there is calm and stability in the village now, and Copts have no problems.? But Rashad says otherwise.

Though he and his sons have since returned to his home, he sent his wife and daughters to stay with family in southern Egypt, afraid that they would be abducted after the mobs threatened Christian women. A man recently pulled a knife on one of his young sons, gloating that ?we trapped you like mice.? When the family escaped the mob, his house was robbed, including the items meant to furnish the new house of his daughter, whose wedding is in April.

?We had nothing to do with this,? he says. ?It?s a story that involves two people. Why are we involved??

Hollywood's in Love with 'Beauty and the Beast' (omg!)

Hollywood's in Love with 'Beauty and the Beast'

It's Valentine's Day, so let's talk about love. Hollywood studios love nothing more than a proven concept (RIP, original idea), and it seems like the timeless love story Beauty and the Beast is back on everyone's love-to-do list. But do we really need four new versions of the classic fairytale to love?

Fairytales are hot again, with box office success of the Shrek series, the Puss in Boots spinoff and films like Tangled and the return of Disney's Beauty and the Beast in 3D. Two competing Snow White fantasies are hitting the big screen in the coming months ? Mirror, Mirror and Snow White and the Huntsman ? and ABC's Once Upon a Time is also a smash.

Lest we forget, Hollywood is a business, first and foremost -- that's why they call it "The Biz" ? and studios are much more comfortable gambling on a tried-and-true concept with brand recognition. Which brings us to all the love Beauty and the Beast is receiving.

This week it was revealed that Guillermo de Toro will be directing Harry Potter star Emma Watson in the big-screen Beast, hot on the heels of the recent announcements that not one but two competing Beauty and the Beast projects are headed to TV (on ABC and The CW).

The CW pilot ordered is based on the '80s Beauty and the Beast TV series starring Linda Hamilton and Ron Perlman, with the update dubbed "a romantic love story with a procedural twist" -- a female cop receiving help "from the shadows" by a "manly man who can quote poetry and kick ass at the same time," and also "beasts out" when the time is right, according to EW.com. Shades of Jacob Black from The Twilight Saga, perhaps?

EW.com also says that the ABC show from Jericho's Jonathan Steinberg is more fantasy-based and described as "a fantastical re-imagining of the classic fairy tale set in a mythical, dangerous world wherein a beautiful and tough princess discovers an unlikely connection with a mysterious beast."

The fourth Beauty and the Beast in question is a new French version that will star Lea Seydoux and Vincent Cassel, reuniting him with his Brotherhood of the Wolf director Christophe Gans. Perhaps this update will channel fellow Frenchman Jean Cocteau's stirring 1946 adaptation of the classic fairytale (La Belle et la B?te), which remains one of the most faithful to the original story ever put on film.

With all of these Beauty and the Beast options, which ones will rise to the top? My money is on the Guillermo del Toro movie version to be the biggest hit. The imaginative director of Pan's Labyrinth and the Hellboy franchise (not to mention his attachment to direct The Hobbit before MGM's financial foot dragging forced him to drop out) has demonstrated a strong capability to combine strong storytelling with vivid imagery, and there will be plenty of curiosity seekers interested in seeing how Emma Watson fares without her magic wand and Hogwarts uniform.

On the TV side, I'll throw a bone to the CW remake of the '80s version of the show. That series had a huge cult following, and I'll bet fans of the original will tune in to see if the new recruits have half the chemistry that Hamilton and Perlman displayed.

And remember, the concept is not bulletproof. One look at the box office of Beastly (starring Vanessa Hudgens and Alex Pettyfer) should be a potent reminder that if you stray a little too far from the formula, you could get burned.

MDs Prescribe and Use Alternative Medicine Treatment Options ...

For anyone who has ever visited a physician complaining of stress, muscle pain, joint pain, you likely expect more traditional and conventional means of treatment. You may expect your doctor to write you a prescription for anti-anxiety medication or a pain reliever. You may also expect your doctor to send you to physical therapy or give you an injection to relieve your pain. This is not always the case. More and more medical doctors ? MDs ? are turning to less conventional means of treatment to help get their patient?s on track to a healthier happier life. Concerned, don?t be.? MDs prescribing alternative medicine methods for their patients, but for themselves as well. A new study indicates that doctors and nurses are more likely to use alternative and complementary medicine more than any other professionals.

medical doctor MDs Prescribe and Use Alternative Medicine Treatment Options

In a study conducted by Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and the Harvard Medical School, research indicates that more than one-third of Americans are using at least one form of alternative or complimentary medicine. Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center indicates that this number of likely to continue to rise based on the use of mind-body therapies. Mind-body therapies can include yoga, deep breathing exercises and meditation. Other mind-body therapies not included in this particular study are meditation, visualization techniques and a form of exercise known as tai chi.

Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center along with the Harvard Medical School have found that nearly one in 30 Americans who are using mind-body therapies are doing so at the advice of their medical provider. While there is good evidence to back the use of mind-body therapies, researchers were shocked to find how many medical providers were referring their patients to these forms of complementary medicine.

Many providers are referring their patients to these types of treatments as a last resort. When more conventional therapeutic treatments for a variety of health ailments fail, traditional medical doctors are more than willing to make the referral to a healthcare service outside of their normal scope of treatment. Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center indicates that individuals referred to mind-body therapies by their healthcare providers are often sicker and spend more time and money on healthcare than those who self-refer to mind-body therapies. Researchers working on this study often wonder if pain and suffering of these patients could have been treated or prevented if doctor?s would consider the use of mind-body therapies early on in treatment and not wait to use these types of therapies as a last resort. However, this consideration has yet to be studied.

The data collected during this study indicates that mind-body therapies have become more of a mainstream approach to healthcare. However, more research is needed to provide patients and healthcare providers with accurate information when it comes to the use of mind-body therapies for a variety of health ailments.

In a 2011 study released in the august edition of Health Services Research journal, researchers have found that health care workers (including doctors and nurses) are more likely to use alternative and complementary medicine more than any other profession. This study indicates that 76 percent of health care workers have indicated they have tried a form of alternative medicine. Only 63 percent of the general public have given alternative and complimentary medicine a try.

This study surveyed 14,329 working adults; only 10 percent who were healthcare workers. The health care workers included doctors, nurses, nursing assistants, technicians, support workers and administrative personnel. According to the study, doctors and nurses were twice as likely to visit a complementary and alternative medicine health practitioner and three times more likely to self-treat with these methods.

According to Joya Lynn-Schoen, MD (a psychiatrist who practices alternative medicine), healthcare workers are more educated on the issues of alternative medicine. This makes these workers more likely to try out and use alternative medicine. The most common reason for a doctor or nurse to use alternative medicine is general wellness, followed by the expenses that come along with conventional medicine.

With lines crossed, alternative medicine and conventional medicine may provide an entirely new means of treating patients. Healthcare providers may be able to optimize the health of a whole person by combining traditional and alternative means of treatment.

Nowitzki, Marion lift Mavs over Clippers 96-92 (AP)

DALLAS ? Dirk Nowitzki scored 22 points, 11 in the final 6-plus minutes, Shawn Marion added 16, and the Dallas Mavericks held on to beat the Los Angeles Clippers 96-92 on Monday night.

Jason Terry, Vince Carter and Brendan Haywood all contributed 10 points for the Mavs, who've won 10 in a row at home against the Clippers and extended their overall winning streak to four games.

Caron Butler of the Clippers scored a season-high 23 points against his former team, and Blake Griffin added 20 points.

Chris Paul had 16 points and nine assists for the Clippers, but Griffin's problems from the foul line cost his team as he missed seven of nine free throws.

The Clippers, who completed a 4-2 road trip, haven't beaten the defending NBA champs in Dallas since April 19, 2006.

Dallas took control with a 7-0 fourth-quarter run capped by Marion's layup with 4:48 remaining for an 86-83 edge.

Griffin had a chance to get the Clippers closer, but missed five straight free throws until connecting with 2:15 to play to pull his team within two points at 86-84.

Jason Kidd set up Terry for a layup with 2:02 left, and Nowitzki intercepted Griffin's pass with 1:47 showing, and drained two free throws to extend Dallas' edge to 90-84.

Griffin's three-point play with 1:24 remaining and Kenyon Martin's layup with 1 minute left narrowed the Mavericks' lead to 90-89.

Nowitzki drained a 19-footer from the right wing and, after Marion stole the ball from Martin, converted two free throws with 21.2 seconds left for a 94-89 advantage. Paul's 3-pointer with 17.8 seconds got the Clippers within two points, and Butler missed a 3-pointer with 4.5 seconds left.

Delonte West made two free throws with 2.9 seconds remaining to seal the victory.

The Clippers carried a 76-74 advantage into the final quarter.

Haywood worked inside for 10 of Dallas' first 22 points and the Mavs carried a 27-19 lead into the second quarter.

Dallas was in front at halftime 55-47 behind 22-for-38 field-goal accuracy (58 percent).

Butler, who received a championship ring from the Mavs in pregame ceremonies, got rolling early when he connected on his first three 3-point attempts in the first quarter.

The Clippers ended a 10-game overall losing streak against the Mavs on Jan. 18 with a 91-89 win in Los Angeles. Chauncey Billups hit the winning 3-pointer with 1 second left. Billups is out for the season with a torn left Achilles' tendon sustained in a game on Feb. 6.

Paul sat out the season's first meeting with Dallas due to a strained left hamstring.

Notes: Butler was a member of the Mavericks' title-winning team last season but missed the final 53 games of the regular season plus the playoffs with a ruptured right patellar tendon. Butler, signed by the Clippers in December as a free agent, made a spirited effort to get his knee healthy enough to contribute for Dallas in the playoffs and Mavs coach Rick Carlisle said before the game that Butler "was very close to being active for the finals. That's how hard he worked." ... Martin, who grew up in Dallas, played his fourth game for the Clippers since signing as a free agent on Feb. 3. ... Before the game, Carlisle called Paul "the best playmaker in basketball."

The Land of Earth Muffin: This kid's gotta get out more...

Little M. has been invited to a Valentine party...a Valentine TEA party, to be precise.?

He doesn't like tea.

Did I tell her that?? He doesn't like tea and he doesn't want to drink it at the party.?

Did I tell her that?

The invitation came, via Facebook, a few weeks ago.? I didn't mention it to him right away.? When he knows of an upcoming event that he's not quite sure he's excited about, the questions and musings are relentless.? I waited until the party was just a week away, then I mentioned it.?

"Hey, Little M., you like to play at G, V and L's house, don't you?? Did you know that they are having a Valentine party next Saturday?? You're invited.? That'll be fun, won't it?"

He agreed that it would be fun, but wanted to know what they would be doing at the party.? Since I really didn't know, I just told him that everyone was bringing one special Valentine to be part of an exchange and there would be snacks.? He's always up for any event where snacks are served.? We talked about what he would need in order to make a special Valentine, and that was that.?

Until I screwed up.

A few days later I said, "Little M., I brought home some of the craft supplies you'll need to make your Valentine for the tea party."

DAMMIT!? I forgot to leave out the word "tea"!? Little M. has always, ALWAYS, had an unreasonable aversion to tea.? Hates it.? HATES IT.? I'd been doing so good, leaving out the fact that this was a "tea" party, and now I just blew it.?

"TEA PARTY?!?? I don't like tea.? I don't want to drink tea.? Did you tell V's mom that I don't like tea?? I don't want to go to a party if there is going to be tea there.? I don't like tea and I don't want to drink tea."

I tried, in vain, to reassure him that he would NOT have to drink tea at the party.? He was not to be swayed.? He did NOT like tea and he would NOT drink it and he did NOT want to go to a party if there was going to be tea there.?

Like I said, an UNREASONABLE aversion to tea.

A day later I was able to talk him down off the ledge.? "Little M., if you don't want to drink tea, no one is going to make you drink tea.? I will let V's mom know that you don't like tea.? I'm sure she'll have something besides tea to drink.? You don't want to miss out on a party with your friends just because there is going to be tea there, do you?? That would be silly.? We go to Aunt L.'s house every 4th of July for a fish fry even though we don't eat fish, don't we?? We still have a good time and there's always plenty of other things for us to eat.? Just forget about the tea and think about how nice it'll be to spend an afternoon with your friends."

He agreed and started coloring some hearts that I'd printed for him to glue onto his Valentine for the party.?

The next day I was hanging some recently washed coffee mugs on our pegs...

And I made another mistake, though my intentions were honorable.? Little M. was approaching meltdown mode over a homework paper, so in an attempt to distract him I said, "Hey, Little M., come here and choose which cup you're going to take to the tea party on Saturday."?

He gave me a "look".? He reminded me that he does NOT like tea and he's NOT going to drink tea so he does NOT need to take a cup to the party.?

I told him that invitation said to bring a favorite tea cup and even if he doesn't want to drink tea he should still bring a cup because surely he'll be drinking something.? I thought he'd want to do this part, we never let him even touch our coffee mugs because he has a habit of breaking them.? I thought for sure he'd choose Big M.'s Simpson's coffee mug.?

Instead, he said, "These aren't teacups.? They're coffee mugs."

Sigh...

I explained that we don't have any actual teacups except for the one with the broken handle that the cat drinks out of, so he should just choose one of our coffee mugs.? "You could take the one with Bart Simpson on it.? Or this one is from the Krispy Kreme store.? This one has a man playing a horn on it, Dad got that one at the Jazz Museum.? What about Mom's blue one with the peace signs?"?

He stared at the mugs, deep in thought.? "The brown one.? I want to take the brown one with the words on it.? Can you get it down for me so I can read it?? Then I'll know what it says when I get to the party and I can read it to everyone."

Sigh...

This is the one he's talking about:

What ensued was a good 20 minutes of discussion as to why this is not an appropriate mug to take to a Valentine tea party for children, with Mr. EM giggling in the background and not being the slightest bit helpful.? The discussion ended with Little M. skulking out of the room saying, "Fine.? I'll just take the stupid blue mug with the stupid peace signs on it."

And now the party has been postponed until next Saturday, so we have another week to get through before this whole ordeal is over.?

Sigh...?
