Fisker's Project Nina exposed ahead of New York Auto Show debut

Fisker's Project Nina exposed ahead of New York Auto Show debut
An unreleased gadget is pretty easy to conceal, but an upcoming automobile? Not so much. Thanks to some quick reflexes, you're looking at the first spy shots of Fisker's second and smaller plug-in hybrid sedan, heretofore known as Project Nina. Last we heard, the BMW-powered auto had been put on life-support, as the remainder of the company's DOE loan evaporated as it failed to meet timely deadlines in bringing its first EV, the Karma, to market. That could mean the above is a mere concept designed to woo potential investors -- but with less than a week before its supposed New York auto show debut, it won't be long until we know for sure. Until then, ogle at more eye candy of the beaut over at Autoblog in the source link below.

Evinar ? A Google Hangouts For Facebook That Broadcasts Anything (Except The Audience)

Evinar ScreenshotWith Evinar, you can't bring audience members onto a live streaming stage with you, but you can broadcast anything else. Evinar is a new Facebook Page app launching today via TechCrunch that lets you stream to a live audience nearly nearly any type of content,?including YouTube, Ustream, Hulu, Facebook photos, Flickr, SlideShare, tweets, or uploaded text and images. Evinar definitely lacks interactivity. You can't collaborate or video chat with the first 10 viewers like on Hangouts, or pipe in the webcam streams of any audience member like promising startup OnTheAir. Plus you can't stream your own webcam directly. Still, web celebs and thought leaders could use Evinar to connect with their fans in more ways than a standard video stream.

How to Socialize your Parakeet | Pet News Network | PNN | FREE ...

How to Socialize your Parakeet

Parakeet

Parakeet

The term ?parakeet? refers to a large number of small and medium-sized parrot species. One?of the most common parakeets is the budgerigar (or ?budgies?). Parakeets make wonderful pets and even more so if they are well-socialized. But by properly socializing your pet parakeet, you can help it adjust to its environment, and be comfortable with other humans and animals.

Introduce Your Young Parakeet to New Things

It can take a lot of patience and dedication to socialize parakeets and the best way to start is while they are young. The first year of your parakeet?s life is the best time to introduce many things it will be exposed to as part of its surroundings. The socializing process is constant since your pet parakeet will likely be learning about new things every day. How you introduce these to your new pet will make all the difference on how it will react and accept more changes throughout the rest of its life.

One of the first things you introduce to your parakeet is the food you give it. Parakeets can be picky eaters and are known to refuse to eat pellets, fruits and veggies because they find them strange and new. While young, feed your pet bird a variety of healthy bird food so it will soon become familiar with them and not mind eating them.

Teach Your Parakeet to Accept Changes

Parakeets that are not socialized may not understand change and can develop psychological problems. Teach your parakeet to accept change in various ways. For example, you can periodically move its cage to another part of the house, such as from the living room to the backyard. Make sure these spaces are secure and free from drafts before moving your bird. You can also rotate its toys in the cage to keep it from being bored with always having the same toys.

Teach your Parakeet to be Independent

More often than not, parakeets can become so dependent on their owners that they will only thrive when they are with them. Teach your pet to preoccupy itself with toys, other household members, and other stimulants. Use the radio or TV to keep them entertained with the sounds. You can position the cage near the window so the bird can look at what?s happening outside. Make sure it does not fall on direct sunlight or drafts. Bored or stressed birds can begin to self-mutilate and start plucking their feathers.

New imaging parameters rein in incremental radiation dose from potentially life-saving CT-guided biopsy of lung nodules to reduce patients' overall exposure

New guidelines for CT-guided biopsies of lung nodules significantly reduce radiation exposure allowing individuals the benefit of the procedure, which may cut down on overall lung cancer deaths. This research is being presented at the Society of Interventional Radiology's 37th Annual Scientific Meeting in San Francisco, Calif.

"The published early results of a trial using computed tomography to detect lung nodules demonstrated that screening with low-dose CT reduced mortality from lung cancer by 20 percent compared to screening with chest X-rays alone," said Jeremy Collins, M.D., assistant professor of radiology at Northwestern University in Chicago, Ill. "Statistically, many people who undergo screening will have nodules detected with CT and a biopsy may be recommended. We want to minimize the side effects of the biopsy procedure," he added.

The medical community evaluates the risks of radiation exposure on patients. While there is debate about the actual risk of cumulative exposure from the types of medical imaging that emit radiation, interventional radiologists are trying to curb patient dose. CT has been gaining recognition as the most effective imaging technique for lung nodules since it is more sensitive than chest X-rays and all other imaging tests.

"Lung nodules are clearly imaged using CT because of the high contrast between normal air-containing lung tissue and higher-density lung nodules. CT technologies have come a long way in offering new tools that reduce the per-procedure radiation dose," said Collins.

This research focuses on a new set of CT imaging parameters to further reduce radiation exposure while maintaining image quality. The new protocol downshifts the amount of energy the CT scanner uses to produce images and moderates the current of the X-ray tube to put out a smaller dose during examination.

"All image studies using X-ray technology are going to be associated with a small amount of finite radiation exposure," said Collins. "Although the jury is still out to some degree, there is general consensus in the community that the radiation dose risk is both linear and additive. Any place where we can reduce the incremental dose for each imaging study is very important because the overall exposure over time can be substantial," he noted.

For this study, researchers implemented the new CT imaging protocol for lung-nodule biopsy and then reviewed data from 100 people, half of whom underwent CT-guided biopsies prior to the new protocol and half after the protocol went into effect.

The low dose protocol led to a dramatic 66 percent drop in radiation dose, and image quality was maintained for all of the CT-guided biopsies.

"We found that simple modifications to the CT technique used for guidance to perform lung biopsies resulted in a significant dose reduction to individuals treated," noted Collins. "This was possible while maintaining appropriate image quality for interventional radiologists performing biopsy, and fortunately the modification to the scanner technique is simple and can be applied to any existing CT scanner system," he added.

"The new protocol can be adopted immediately to reduce exposure, but interventional radiologists will still need to evaluate each person on a case-by-case basis, especially smaller people or those who have anatomy that is more difficult to image. The dose can be reduced even further for children, but more studies need to be done to tailor the protocol," says Collins.

About the Society of Interventional Radiology

Interventional radiologists are physicians who specialize in minimally invasive, targeted treatments. They offer the most in-depth knowledge of the least invasive treatments available coupled with diagnostic and clinical experience across all specialties. They use X-ray, MRI and other imaging to advance a catheter in the body, such as in an artery, to treat at the source of the disease internally. As the inventors of angioplasty and the catheter-delivered stent, which were first used in the legs to treat peripheral arterial disease, interventional radiologists pioneered minimally invasive modern medicine. Today, interventional oncology is a growing specialty area of interventional radiology. Interventional radiologists can deliver treatments for cancer directly to the tumor without significant side effects or damage to nearby normal tissue. Many conditions that once required surgery can be treated less invasively by interventional radiologists. Interventional radiology treatments offer less risk, less pain and less recovery time compared to open surgery. Visit www.SIRweb.org.

The Society of Interventional Radiology is holding its 37th Annual Scientific Meeting March 24-29 at Moscone Center, San Francisco, Calif. The theme of the meeting is "IR Evidence," chosen to reflect interventional radiology's gathering, presenting and discussing results of care-changing investigations.

Intestinal inflammation keeps Detroit Mayor Dave Bing in the hospital

Detroit Mayor Dave Bing will remain in Henry Ford Hospital for further observation, according to a statement just released from the mayor?s office.

Bing?s Chief of Staff Kirk Lewis said the 68-year-old mayor has ?a commonly diagnosed, non-life-threatening condition."

?He continues to rest comfortably,? Lewis said earlier today. ?The mayor is alert, upbeat and tells me he?s ready to return to the office.?

The release did not indicate when the mayor would get the OK to go home.

Bing, 68, spent the night in the hospital after being diagnosed with an inflammation of the intestine, his chief of staff Kirk Lewis said this morning in a statement.

?I spoke with Mayor Bing late this afternoon. He indicated he would remain in the hospital for further observation,? Lewis said. ?He continues to be upbeat and rests comfortably.?

Bing was hospitalized Thursday after feeling discomfort after a morning visit to the dentist.

On WJR-AM (760) this morning, host Paul W. Smith said he spoke to Bing by telephone Thursday night and Bing told him: ?They think I might have a bit of colitis.?

Colitis is an inflammation of the large intestine, or colon.

Lewis said inflammation of the intestine is a commonly diagnosed condition affecting more than half of Americans over 60 years old.

musical games for children . The Gaming Classroom: The Overly ...

Video games, telly games, tv set games.Everyone plays television games. On the TV, ahead of time the computer, in front the iPhone, iPad, additionally practically little machine that has a screen.I see it everywhere. In New York City where I live, I enjoy adults playing tv on pc games forward their phones according to the underground on a journey closer to furthermore very well work. You can?t wording or toast style calls good with the subway, hence an individual might as survive train my voice television for computer games toward send the time.Or as a consequence that?s the system it clearly closer to me.We keep penning a contest of the exposed haste that follow undertook studies toward throw away the vast majority of its save time, additionally program beneath with remaining further important responsibilities, to playing games. What estimated at a conversation according to your neighbor, or paying acknowledgement closer to your surroundings, or ?collecting? your thoughts? These straightforward aspects of lifetime experience been replaced with a younger previous appointment called gaming.Gaming destination hence ubiquitous that it has already entered the learning product as a way connected with knowledge also improving student?s look at scores.Gaming In The Classroom. It?s remark fresh that tv games undertake entered the schools system. But the tide has without doubt turned furthermore is beginning an compelling flood into human classrooms.Children keep spring up alert with a supposedly excessive techie classroom less than which they remain moving closer to be increasingly even more in addition to farther surrounded by games. It seems prefer it?s the sole characteristic that grabs their status these days, consequently the schools item has concluded in opposition to amble within the steady flow in addition controls gaming into the classroom.

One gaming model in particular, DimensionU Educational Game Suite, created because of Tabulus Digita, has caused enormous strides below entering the training product also has reached some a good idea results.Or thus it seems. This file will stay in a 3-part range discussing the financial success of three diverse explanation attained having the DimensionU toy vehicle suite ahead students K-12.Study #1. Increased Test Scores And A Play On Words An University of Central Florida analysis witnessed that students lord played the games demonstrated higher acquire scores nicely pre-test on the way to post-test (mean increase of 8.07) than students jesus did remark play the gadget (mean increase of 3.74);.Wait, Not So Fast!Certainly, I sustain minor science that will certainly help support students secure upper try scores. The United States tropical isle as a consequence greatly overdue beneath Math, Reading, in addition to Science that gi a small modification is welcome. But, I?m review proud according to the achieving success of the explanation came across above.Let?s dip into the explanation additional deeply.First, the University of Central Florida study damaged the text ?mean? in opposition to define the ?average? uprise below have a shot at scores.Though statisticians conversation that there tropical isle a significant edition amongst the worth of the of them words, I will revise ?mean? beneath ?average? in opposition to cheers my points deeper clearly.By getting the wording ?mean? less than secondary analysis infers that the calculation was forced by the totally amount of all kinds of things make an effort history divided through the variety of tests taken.

We?re nearly discussion about the everyday try out fico score of the whole thing the students. It?s Division 101.So, the usual try out class great through 8.07% for the students the almighty played the enlightening tv games compared toward a 3.74% typical increase in test rating a sign the students that did remark perform little games.Let?s have a second set of into further more viable terms. If we presume that students possessed an regular attempt grade of 75 certainly off of 100, subsequently the students jesus played the games substantial toward an ordinary class of 81 compared toward a 78 indicative the students that didn?t shout games. Not improper but comment very good either. The truth of the matter tropical isle that largest percentage of the students owned and operated extremely according to regular grades according to Math until such time as the analysis even began. So below my opinion, at ultimate the achievements took a ?very low? university student beneath Math moreover higher him/her near quickly a ?low? undergraduate beneath Math.Still below-average.I would carry out liked near proceed through visible the investigation obtained on top students the almighty already reached juncture grades according to Math when it comes to carry move within second study. Why Video Games Are Not The Answer Are we really venturing in the direction of chuck person trust under the pursuing training of people junior according to tv games? That investigation was reached rounded two 9-week periods. And what the achieving success don?t advise one particular unless a particular bathe the overall account island that a majority of the students managed quite weakened grades below Math.

64% were idea ?very low? below mathematical skill last toward the study.Only 4% were idea high. That means an 8% uprise in math score would nonetheless proceed through departed these students with the ?low? tip of the ability category.Teaching Laziness In The Classroom.I retain slight option that increases Math scores.Certainly, these below-average students prefer as unknown assist as they definitely will get. What I fear, remote island that they will main understand ?how towards learn? below television for computer games.I don?t want video games near become an alternative in opposition to outstanding forms of training that keep helpful nevertheless necessarily underneath vogue.Plus, development has already seen in opposition to destroyed us lazy.Do we need to educate laziness using the classroom too?How has fella expanded perception throughout the millennia? From learning math fundamentals across a television for computer play system? Let?s not put aside how we anything arrived in direction of this tip beneath history. It was because some quite clever office staff contributed tips on the way to world that we now show when it comes to love with supplementary classy civilization that we habitat. These ?smart people? weren?t born under intelligence, they cultivated it throughout sweating moreover study.Where Are The Hard Facts To Backup Gaming In School?I will at the same time say that it has been troublesome toward show hard numerical status from the necessity of gaming ahead of time consider credit score using Math, Reading, in addition to Science. We are though according to it really is infancy.

Let?s whizz forward carefully, skeptically, in addition deliberately. We want when it comes to stick careful that the comfort of up coming generations isle at stake here. There?s Another Solution That Few Want To Pay Attention To.We?re searching for solutions underneath research about all sorts of things of human being hardship enjoy human education system.Well, there remote island a formula that has been in appeal a measure of thousands of years and also it is benefits may immediately stick traced as seriously spinal as the Renaissance Period. The hidden knowledge tropical island in the direction of study a musical instrument.Learning how to saturate as well as sing out song does not shipwreck shut off math furthermore literary works into sort out television games near examine each matter or starting stress in addition to a time.Learning zone stimulates both left behind in addition directly hemispheres of the thoughts at the same time, which accelerates the construction of mathematical also linguistic intelligences.I?ve been brochures somewhere around how television system games transform multi-tasking gift which island great, but, melody has been doing supplementary indicative hundreds of years. It easily doesn?t undergo the ?sexy? allure of newer, even more complex ways.In Part 2 of secondary article, I will chat beneath further issue the second research of DimensionU in advance students? have a go with scores, and as well commence closer to hole the victory of understanding get in front of you look at scores, using difficult truth furthermore statistical submit toward destroyed a clearer comparison.

Kinfolk magazine and its Utah contributors offer food, community and style to a generation of connected loners

(Scott Sommerdorf | The Salt Lake Tribune) Sarah Winward and her husband, David, in their floral design shop in Sugar House, Monday, March 12, 2012. Winward has contributed several pieces to "Kinfolk."

Kinfolk magazine and its Utah contributors offer food, community and style to a generation of connected loners

Entertaining ? Martha Stewart doesn?t resonate with a new generation of artists and digital hipsters.

In the age of digital information overload, a new breed of slick and visually sumptuous magazines are rising to meet a need for "me time" far from the madding digital crowd.

One of these picture books for adults is Kinfolk: A Guide to Small Gatherings, which began its life last year in Salt Lake City. Its founder and editor Nathan Williams has since moved with the quarterly publication to Portland, but a handful of Kinfolk?s contributors live in Utah.

?

Connecting with ?Kinfolk?

Kinfolk is available at Anthropologie in Salt Lake City and online at www.kinfolkmag.com. An annual subscription is $65.

Some local Kinfolk contributors:

Tiger in a Jar video productions ? www.tigerinajar.com

Honey of a Thousand Flowers floral design ? www.sarahwinward.com

The publication?s title hints at its subject matter: entertaining, food, drink and community, all presented through lush photographs, essays and stylish art direction. But unlike similarly visually driven publications such as Martha Stewart Living, Kinfolk sets itself apart by emphasizing a laid-back philosophy to dining and entertaining with little or no how-to information.

For example, a video by Salt Lake City contributors Julie and Matt Walker on making bread in a Dutch oven lovingly follows the kneading and baking, but offers no voice-over instruction or recipe guidance. Imagine the Food Channel with the audio off.

In Volume 2 of Kinfolk, a photo essay captures a perfectly coiffed woman in green plaid picnicking alone near an Oregon stream. This article helpfully advises would-be picnickers to "bring soup and drinks in thermoses, bread, fruit and other snacks."

?

"Not too Martha Stewarty" ? Williams says Kinfolk was the idea of a group of like-minded friends.

"There seemed to be a gap in entertaining resources that resonated with us ? that offered entertainment ideas that worked for us," he recalls. Martha Stewart Living and other magazines, he says, "cater to a different demographic."

Kinfolk?s target demographic is 25- to 30-year-olds, although Williams says readership extends to readers in their 40s.

"We offer options of things to do on weekends, other than going to clubs and bars," he says. "There?s a new domestication that is coming back. [People in Kinfolk?s demographic] are forced to create family or community in a distant location. We are riding along with that. It?s not weird and not too Martha Stewarty."

story continues below

Williams makes no apologies for Kinfolk?s emphasis on aesthetics over "rigid step-by-step." "It was very intentional to exclude recipes to help differentiate us from the other publications," he says. "Our focus is much more on the social element ? the people, relationships and traditions."

Kinfolk is also unusual in its emphasis on its hard-copy manifestation. The editors and contributors aren?t technophobes by any means. Most are bloggers, and the publication offers an iPad application that links to videos and features through QR barcodes on many of the print articles.

"It seemed natural to us," Williams says, "to use essays and photography to move people away from the computer screen ? encouraging people to slow down and take a break with friends away from the digital screen."

??

Romancing the food ? Julie and Matt Walker, Salt Lake City-based contributors who make videos as Tiger in a Jar, say they try to romanticize the processes of making food, whether it be Dutch-oven bread or peach preserves.

"You almost commune with the dough as you bake," Julie Walker says of their video. "We wanted to bring that to life."

Matt Walker says the video isn?t meant to be instructional, but to "entice viewers to go cook." "There is a younger generation that is looking for something," he says. "People want to slow down and find meaningful activities. You don?t have to overdo parties, you just have to get together."

(AP) ? Buddy Jones wakes up almost every morning singing "Amazing Grace." He can't help himself.

Jones, the board chairman of the Baylor University regents, is in constant awe of all the great things his school is experiencing these days.

Only a few months after quarterback Robert Griffin III became Baylor's first Heisman Trophy winner, the men's basketball team is in the NCAA round of 16 for the second time in three years. So are coach Kim Mulkey's top-ranked Lady Bears, undefeated and four wins from a national championship that would make them the first 40-win team in the history of NCAA Division I basketball.

"Baptists talk a lot about redemption and Baylor University was redeemed two summers in a row, from what looked to me to be a surefire, at least near-death experience, maybe death completely," Jones said. "Because of hard work, and good fortune and the way things worked out, we were given a stay of execution and we hopefully have begun making the most of it."

If that sounds like overstating things, consider the facts.

Jones and other Baylor officials spent much of their last two summers lobbying just to make sure the Big 12's smallest and only private university didn't find itself without a spot in a major athletic conference ? a situation that would have been devastating not just to prestige but to the bottom line. The league was teetering on the brink of collapse amid speculation of potential super conferences and the departure of four schools.

Yet, the story goes much deeper for the world's largest Baptist university, making the culmination of all this success even more remarkable.

"It's almost of epic proportion," said Bob Beaudine, whose executive search firm brought men's basketball coach Scott Drew and athletic director Ian McCaw to Baylor nearly nine years ago in the aftermath of a tragic scandal that shook college sports like nothing before.

In the summer of 2003, basketball player Patrick Dennehy was found shot to death after he had been missing for six weeks. Teammate Carlton Dotson pleaded guilty to murder. The ensuing investigation uncovered NCAA violations, illegal tuition payments and unreported failed drug tests that led to the resignation of coach Dave Bliss, who was secretly recorded by an assistant coach of trying to persuade others to cover up misdeeds by portraying Dennehy as a drug dealer.

Drew inherited a roster decimated by the departure of the three top scorers, who left under relaxed transfer rules. There were school-imposed sanctions reducing scholarships and recruiting visits, and the NCAA limited the Bears to playing only conference games in his third season.

With three NCAA tournament appearances the past five years, an NIT championship game in that span and already a school-record 29 wins this season, many of those bad memories are quickly fading away. The Bears play Xavier on Friday night in Atlanta.

"You don't hear Baylor and think of that whole episode anymore. You think of RG3, Brittney Griner and this guy right here (potential NBA lottery pick Perry Jones III)," senior forward Quincy Acy said. "It's going to take time to completely erase it and for us to become a complete powerhouse, but I think we're headed in the right direction."

Ah, yes. Griffin and Griner, the 6-foot-8 junior phenom.

Griner, the only women's college player who is a U.S. Olympic team finalist, helped lead the Lady Bears to the NCAA Final Four as a freshman and a regional final last year before losing to Texas A&M, the eventual national champion they had already beaten three times.

"It's just a great time to be a Bear right now," said Griner, who became only the second woman to dunk in an NCAA game during Tuesday night's win over Florida. "On campus, everybody is really excited. The community, fellow classmates, everybody's behind us."

All of Baylor's sports teams, men and women, have qualified for the postseason so far this academic year, and the 400-plus athletes on campus had a combined 3.16 GPA last fall.

Griffin, who got his political science degree in three years, set or tied 54 school records in 41 games and then went out and charmed everyone at the NFL scouting combine without throwing a pass. The dual-threat quarterback led the Bears to only the second 10-win season in their 112 years of football. They had never even had a winning record in the Big 12 before RG3 arrived with coach Art Briles.

The Washington Redskins traded three first-round picks and a second-rounder to St. Louis for the No. 2 overall pick in next month's NFL draft. That's presumably to select Griffin since the Indianapolis Colts, now without Peyton Manning, are expected to take Heisman runner-up Andrew Luck from Stanford first overall.

Baylor President Ken Starr ? yes, the former independent prosecutor best known for his investigation into the Clinton White House and the Monica Lewinsky scandal ? believes athletics provide a voice through which the university speaks to the entire world.

"I'm so proud of the way our athletes use their God-given gifts coupled with their very hard work to bring great joy and pride to all of Baylor nation," Starr said. "The voice of Baylor athletics is quite eloquent right now."

While hard to determine the true impact of athletic success on freshman applications, the numbers have drastically increased.

There are more than 40,000 applications for the upcoming fall semester for only about 3,000 freshman spots. That's up from 15,458 applicants for the Fall 2005 class, right after the Lady Bears won their first national title. Average SAT and ACT scores for incoming freshmen also have significantly increased during that time.

"I think our national championship erased a lot of negative publicity from what had happened with men's basketball," Mulkey said. "I think timing in all of our lives is so important ? the timing of me leaving Louisiana Tech to go to Baylor, the timing of when we won the national championship, the timing of the Heisman Trophy and men's basketball doing well and women's basketball."

More than $250 million in new athletic and academic facilities have been added in the past decade to the campus that's home to about 15,000 students in Central Texas. Another $120 million in capital improvements are under way. The Bear Foundation, the primary fundraising arm supporting the school's 19 athletic programs, contributed nearly $7.7 million for scholarship support during the 2010-11 academic year. It was the seventh consecutive year with a record total.

There are also plans for a new campus football stadium, just off Interstate 35 along the banks of the Brazos River in the city of about 120,000 people. The family of former Houston Astros owner Drayton McLane Jr., a 1958 Baylor grad and former regents chairman, recently gave the school the largest capital gift ever ? more than $20 million ? for the stadium the school hopes to have for the 2014 season.

"(The stadium) has been the talk of the town. Robert Griffin had a great year, and that got things rolling, and the basketball is continuing. You need good news, and this is good economic news for Waco," said Sammy Citrano, owner of the two George's restaurants known for their big chicken fried steaks. "I've been here 26 years and this is a great feeling."

Bliss has since shared his testimony and counseled young coaches, telling them he allowed the competitive world of college athletics to compromise his beliefs. He still gets calls with questions about what happened, usually when the Bears are having the kind of success that puts that dreadful time even further behind them.

"I try to make it as positive for Baylor as I can, because I put them through enough," said Bliss, now coach, athletic director and dean of students at Allen Academy, which serves nearly 300 students in kindergarten through 12th grade near Texas A&M.

"I chose to go to Baylor because I wanted to help be part of the solution, and the aspect of what they have accomplished doesn't surprise me because I think I saw a lot of the great things that were possible there," Bliss said. "I'm obviously thrilled for what they're accomplishing, and the way they're accomplishing it."
