Practice report: Ryan Tannehill reportedly on the other side of Florida as Miami Dolphins hold 2nd day of training camp

The Dolphins are holding their second practice of training camp this morning, but their franchise quarterback is reportedly across the state in Bradenton.

Ryan Tannehill, still squabbling with the Dolphins over ?offset language? in his contract, has checked into IMG Academies to train with former Florida State quarterback Chris Weinke, according to ESPN?s Chris Mortensen. Weinke, the director of football operations at IMG?s Madden Football Academy, also trained Cam Newton during last year?s lockout.

According to the report, Tannehill brought his Dolphins iPad playbook with him, and ?has a full staff of strength and conditioning coaches, a performance coach and a certified athletics trainer at his disposal.?

Meanwhile, back in Davie, today will be David Garrard?s turn to work with the first-team offense, after Matt Moore got the snaps yesterday.

Below, we have the live updates from practice at the top, followed by post-practice quotes from several players and coach Joe Philbin:

* Brian Hartline took a couple reps with the first team offense today, after playing mostly with the twos on Friday, but the top three receivers still appear to be Chad Johnson, Legedu Naanee and Davone Bess. Julius Pruitt got some looks in four-WR sets, and he and Roberto Wallace are clearly the fifth and sixth guys right now. Hartline didn?t really practice on Saturday and is clearly still dealing with the after-effects of his appendectomy from this summer.

* Garrard connects with Pruitt on a really nice 25-yard seam route with Vontae Davis and Tyrone Culver in coverage. Crowd goes wild.

* Chris Clemons, hobbled all last season by a hamstring injury, is sitting out this practice with some sort of right leg injury (he?s wearing a compression sleeve). Culver and Jimmy Wilson replace him at free safety.

* Charles Clay looks FAST when catching and running. This guy is going to be lining up all over the field.

* Hartline and Clemons have completely removed themselves from practice and are now working with a trainer off to the side.

* Artis Hicks continues to work as the starting right guard, John Jerry is working with the second team and Eric Steinbach is at left guard with the second team. TE Jeron Mastrud is also getting reps with the first team offense, along with Anthony Fasano and Charles Clay.

* In 11 on 11 drills, Richard Marshall, not Vontae Davis, is paired up with Sean Smith at cornerback. And Jimmy Wilson is lined up at free safety in Clemons? spot.

* Garrard does a really nice job of avoiding the rush and floating a perfect pass to Charles Clay for a big game, just over the out-stretched arms of Jimmy Wilson. But it may have been a sack in real football. But Garrard can?t connect with Reggie Bush on a screen pass, floating the ball a little too high.

* Couple of bad drops by Daniel Thomas and Jerome Messam in passing drills. Messam needs to have an excellent camp to beat out Steve Slaton for the fourth tailback spot.

* Speaking of Slaton, he limped off the field with a trainer toward the end of practice. Curious to see if this is a cramp or something more serious.

* Garrard threw a beautiful deep sideline pass to Chad Johnson, while Moore threaded the needle perfectly to Chris Hogan down the seam. Johnson also drew a nice pass interference penalty on Jimmy Wilson.

* Second-round pick Jonathan Martin, plugged in as the starting right tackle, needs to work on his jump off the ball. Saw him false start at least two times today, probably more.

* Richard Marshall took a couple of reps as the outside cornerback instead of Vontae Davis, and rookie Olivier Vernon took a few of Cam Wake?s snaps.

* The Dolphins will put on the pads for the first time on Sunday after going through a ?climatization period? for the first two days of camp. Joe Philbin anticipates having his players put on pads for most practices, but ?I doubt you?ll see us in pads for three hours straight in practice, so we?re going to pick our spots.?

* Roberto Wallace and Julius Pruitt have been getting a lot of buzz to be the final receivers to make the roster, and Philbin has noticed them, too. ?I think they?ve caught the ball very well,? he said. ?You watch them run around the practice field they?re the first guys in their drills, they?re hustling. I love their attitude. We?ll see as the camp unfolds, but I think those two guys definitely have a future.?

* Pruitt, entering his fourth season out of tiny Ouachita Baptist (Ark.) College, wants to catch touchdowns and be a star receiver, but understands that excelling on special teams is his best way of making the roster. ?It?s all about finding your role, and if that?s my role, I?m gonna be the best at it,? he said.

* New guard Eric Steinbach has almost exclusively played left guard throughout his eight-year career with Cincinnati and Cleveland, and has been playing left guard with the second team through two days of training camp. But the Dolphins? hole is at right guard, and Steinbach, who missed all of 2011 following back surgery, is willing to play anywhere on the line. ?You put the best five up front,? he said Saturday, ?and as long as I?m healthy and getting the system down, I feel confident that I?m one of the best five.?

Olympic Viewing: Coverage of London games

RATINGS: An estimated 36 million people watched Sunday night's Olympics competition on NBC. Through three days, an average of 35.8 million people are watching the games in prime-time, up from 30.6 million who saw the first three days in Beijing four years ago, according to the Nielsen company. Gymnastics ruled, apparently, for Sunday viewers. A study by the digital video recorder maker Tivo found that the top four moments played back and watched again on NBC's telecast were all about gymnastics. The top moment was Alexandra Reisman's uneven bars performance, with an entertaining reaction from her parents in the stands.

TWITTER: A Los-Angeles-based reporter for a British newspaper found his Twitter account suspended after he posted the email address of NBC Olympics president Gary Zenkel in a critical tweet. Guy Adams of The Independent had criticized NBC for broadcasting Friday's opening ceremony on tape delay. NBC Sports said that it had filed a complaint with Twitter about Adams tweeting its executive's personal information, and Twitter disciplined him.

EXTRA TIME: All of the non-prime time coverage by NBC and its cable networks makes for an entertaining opportunity to see events that wouldn't normally get much focus. The NBC Sports network on Friday showed 19-year-old Iowa resident Miranda Leek's down-to-the-wire archery competition, for example. She lost, and her Olympics were done before noon local time on the third day of competition. Then the cable network aired in full a rerun of Sunday's swimming relay race in which France beat the U.S., complete with the pre-race set-up. Some highlights would have been fine, but couldn't the network have found something fresh to fill the time?

TODAY: Savannah Guthrie may yet work out as a "Today" show host, but when Meredith Vieira is back, it feels as though there is another adult on the set.

EXPENSIVE TASTE: NBC's Jimmy Roberts aired a fun feature about pub crawling in London, running into John McEnroe during his extensive liquid research. After the segment, studio host Al Michaels asked Roberts, "Can you and I go on a caviar bar crawl next week?" We'll call the butler to arrange it.

QUOTE: "I think almost definitely we would have done the same thing." ? CBS Corp. Chairman Leslie Moonves to Broadcasting & Cable, backing his rival NBC against criticism for airing tape-delayed events during its prime-time telecasts.

Chronic 2000-04 drought, worst in 800 years, may be the 'new normal'

Chronic 2000-04 drought, worst in 800 years, may be the 'new normal' [ Back to EurekAlert! ] Public release date: 29-Jul-2012

CORVALLIS, Ore. The chronic drought that hit western North America from 2000 to 2004 left dying forests and depleted river basins in its wake and was the strongest in 800 years, scientists have concluded, but they say those conditions will become the "new normal" for most of the coming century.

Such climatic extremes have increased as a result of global warming, a group of 10 researchers reported today in Nature Geoscience. And as bad as conditions were during the 2000-04 drought, they may eventually be seen as the good old days.

Climate models and precipitation projections indicate this period will actually be closer to the "wet end" of a drier hydroclimate during the last half of the 21st century, scientists said.

Aside from its impact on forests, crops, rivers and water tables, the drought also cut carbon sequestration by an average of 51 percent in a massive region of the western United States, Canada and Mexico, although some areas were hit much harder than others. As vegetation withered, this released more carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, with the effect of amplifying global warming.

"Climatic extremes such as this will cause more large-scale droughts and forest mortality, and the ability of vegetation to sequester carbon is going to decline," said Beverly Law, a co-author of the study, professor of global change biology and terrestrial systems science at Oregon State University, and former science director of AmeriFlux, an ecosystem observation network.

"During this drought, carbon sequestration from this region was reduced by half," Law said. "That's a huge drop. And if global carbon emissions don't come down, the future will be even worse."

This research was supported by the National Science Foundation, NASA, U.S. Department of Energy, and other agencies. The lead author was Christopher Schwalm at Northern Arizona University. Other collaborators were from the University of Colorado, University of California at Berkeley, University of British Columbia, San Diego State University, and other institutions.

It's not clear whether or not the current drought in the Midwest, now being called one of the worst since the Dust Bowl, is related to these same forces, Law said. This study did not address that, and there are some climate mechanisms in western North America that affect that region more than other parts of the country.

But in the West, this multi-year drought was unlike anything seen in many centuries, based on tree ring data. The last two periods with drought events of similar severity were in the Middle Ages, from 977-981 and 1146-1151. The 2000-04 drought affected precipitation, soil moisture, river levels, crops, forests and grasslands.

Ordinarily, Law said, the land sink in North America is able to sequester the equivalent of about 30 percent of the carbon emitted into the atmosphere by the use of fossil fuels in the same region. However, based on projected changes in precipitation and drought severity, scientists said that this carbon sink, at least in western North America, could disappear by the end of the century.

"Areas that are already dry in the West are expected to get drier," Law said. "We expect more extremes. And it's these extreme periods that can really cause ecosystem damage, lead to climate-induced mortality of forests, and may cause some areas to convert from forest into shrublands or grassland."

During the 2000-04 drought, runoff in the upper Colorado River basin was cut in half. Crop productivity in much of the West fell 5 percent. The productivity of forests and grasslands declined, along with snowpacks. Evapotranspiration decreased the most in evergreen needleleaf forests, about 33 percent.

The effects are driven by human-caused increases in temperature, with associated lower soil moisture and decreased runoff in all major water basins of the western U.S., researchers said in the study.

Although regional precipitations patterns are difficult to forecast, researchers in this report said that climate models are underestimating the extent and severity of drought, compared to actual observations. They say the situation will continue to worsen, and that 80 of the 95 years from 2006 to 2100 will have precipitation levels as low as, or lower than, this "turn of the century" drought from 2000-04.

"Towards the latter half of the 21st century the precipitation regime associated with the turn of the century drought will represent an outlier of extreme wetness," the scientists wrote in this study.

These long-term trends are consistent with a 21st century "megadrought," they said.

Key role for Bill Clinton at Democratic convention

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Former President Bill Clinton will have a marquee role in this summer's Democratic National Convention, where he will make a forceful case for President Barack Obama's re-election and his economic vision for the country, several Obama campaign and Democratic party officials said Sunday.

The move gives the Obama campaign an opportunity to take advantage of the former president's immense popularity and remind voters that a Democrat was in the White House the last time the American economy was thriving.

Obama personally asked Clinton to speak at the convention and place Obama's name in nomination, and Clinton enthusiastically accepted, officials said. Clinton speaks regularly to Obama and to campaign officials about strategy.

Clinton's prominent role at the convention will also allow Democrats to embrace party unity in a way that is impossible for Republican rival Mitt Romney.

George W. Bush, the last Republican to hold the White House, remains politically toxic in some circles. While Bush has endorsed Romney, he is not involved in his campaign and has said he does not plan to attend the GOP convention.

Clinton will speak in prime-time at the Democratic convention in Charlotte, N.C., on Sept. 5, the night before Obama formally accepts the party nomination. While the number two on the ticket often speaks that night, the Obama campaign has instead decided that Obama and Vice President Joe Biden will speak on the same night.

Biden will speak before Obama on Sept. 6, in front of tens of thousands of people expected to fill an outdoor stadium in Charlotte, and millions more on television.

The vice president's speech will focus on outlining many of the challenges the White House has faced over the past four years and the decisions Obama made to address them, officials said.

"To us it's about deploying our assets in the most effective way," Obama campaign strategist David Axelrod said. "To have President Clinton on Wednesday night laying out the choice facing voters, and then having Vice President Biden speak right before the president in prime time on Thursday, giving a testimony to the decisions the president has made, the character of his leadership and the battle to rebuild the middle class that's so central to our message."

Clinton's role at the convention was to be formally announced Monday. It was first reported by The New York Times.

Clinton spoke at the 2008 convention, part of a healing process for the Democratic party following the heated primary battle between Obama and the former president's wife, Hillary Rodham Clinton.

Since then, the ties between Obama and Bill Clinton have strengthened significantly. Obama has called on the former president for advice several times during his term and the two have appeared together this year at campaign fundraisers for Obama's re-election bid.

Enbridge races to clean up Wisconsin oil spill, restart line

GRAND MARSH, Wisconsin (Reuters) - Canada's Enbridge Inc. raced on Sunday to repair a major pipeline that spilled more than 1,000 barrels of oil in a Wisconsin field, provoking fresh ire from Washington over the latest in a series of leaks.

The spill on Friday, which comes almost two years to the day after a ruptured Enbridge line fouled part of the Kalamazoo River in Michigan, has forced the closure of a major conduit for Canadian light crude shipments to U.S. refiners and threatens further reputational damage to a company that launched an over $3 billion expansion program just two months ago.

Enbridge said it intended to begin repairs to Line 14 late on Saturday after making "excellent progress" in clean-up, allowing for visual inspection of the line. But it still did not know what had caused the incident and provided no estimated on when the 318,000 barrels per day Line 14 might resume service.

An image of the site posted on Enbridge's website showed a patch of damp, blackened earth near a stand of trees about one-third the size of a football field. It found some oil on two small farm ponds, but said they did not connect to moving waterways and that drinking wells did not seem to be affected.

Although the spill appeared to be relatively small and quickly contained, it comes at a delicate time for Enbridge, which suffered another leak in Alberta, Canada a month ago and endured a scathing report from U.S. safety regulators over its handling of the Michigan incident in 2010, with employees likened to the "Keystone Kops" for their bungled response.

"Enbridge is fast becoming to the Midwest what BP was to the Gulf of Mexico, posing troubling risks to the environment," U.S. Representative Ed Markey, the top Democrat on the Natural Resources Committee, said in a statement.

"The company must be forthcoming about this entire incident, and deserves a top-to-bottom review of their safety culture, procedures and standards," said Markey, an outspoken critic of increasing imports of Canada's heavy oil sands crude.

Just two months ago, Enbridge kicked off one of the most sweeping expansions in its history, announcing a multibillion-dollar series of projects aimed at moving western Canada and North Dakota oil to Eastern refineries and eliminating costly bottlenecks in the U.S. Midwest.

The Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA), which has the authority to prevent Enbridge from restarting the line, said it had launched an investigation. Officials from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources are also on site, Enbridge said in a statement.

Line 14 is a 24-inch diameter pipe that was installed in 1998, making it a relatively new line. Enbridge said it had been inspected twice in the past five years.

    TWO LANDOWNERS, ONE HOUSE 'COVERED'

In most cases, smaller pipeline leaks can be repaired quickly, although regulators may require significant work if they find any cause for alarm. Following the leak in Michigan two years ago, one line was shut for more than two months.

Enbridge said two landowners had been affected and that one family had been relocated for their safety and comfort, but that most of the spill was restricted to the pipeline right-of-way. It kept its estimate of the spill at around 1,200 barrels -- about as much as would fit in six very large oil tanker trucks.

"The house right next to where the pipeline broke got covered with oil," said Patrick Swadish, who lives just about a mile northwest of the spill site in a rural area of mostly farmland about 80 miles north of the college town of Madison.

Oil trucks, Enbridge vehicles and about a dozen crews were working in the area, which had been cordoned off by sheriff deputies. Local law enforcement officials said they had been told it may take up to 30 days to clean the area.

Enbridge also said it had briefly shut down two larger adjacent lines -- the 400,000 bpd Line 61 and the 670,000 bpd Line 6A -- but both were pumping again within a day. Together with Line 14, they form the backbone of Lakehead, a 2.5 million bpd network that is the main route for Canadian exports.

Another line, the 180,000 bpd Line 13, which carries diluent from Chicago to Edmonton, Alberta, would be restarted once it was confirmed it had not been impacted by the release, it said.

    PREVIOUS SPILLS

Just weeks ago, the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board blasted Enbridge's handling of the July 2010 rupture of its Line 6B near Marshall, Michigan, which led to more than 20,000 barrels of crude leaking into the Kalamazoo River.

The NTSB said it found a complete breakdown of company safety measures, and that Enbridge employees performed like "Keystone Kops" trying to contain it. The rupture went undetected for 17 hours.

U.S. pipeline regulators fined it $3.7 million for the spill, their largest ever penalty.

The incidents, plus the most recent spill in Alberta, have caused furor just as the company seeks approval for its C$6 billion Northern Gateway pipeline to Canada's West Coast amid staunch opposition from environmental groups and native communities that warn against oil spills.

Quickly Learn How To Forex Trade Such As The Finance Institutions ...

There are plenty of approaches to trade with Forex. Brief term day trading is amongst the most well-liked approaches. You?ll find also traders who comply with a more basic approach to Forex. These people are more medium-to-long term investors. If you?re not clear on what the differences are, that may be explained later in the article. Basically what I am going to speak about is tips on how to trade exactly like probably the most prosperous Forex traders in the world. That is right, you are going to study to Forex trade just like the banks.

Let?s very first begin off using the various approaches to trade Forex. Firstly, day traders are more focused on short term earnings. These are the traders who sit in front of their monitors endlessly watching charts go up and down. They purely analyse information from charts, also known as technical evaluation. These traders are ordinarily in and out of positions every single couple of hours to every single couple of minutes. While this approach to trading can earn lots of revenue, these that study to Forex trade this way often come across themselves being obsessive and extremely stressed. One of the dangers of short term day trading is, because it is more focused on chart movements they will be much less most likely to comply with significant news events that could easily influence a currency?s value.

Men and women who study to Forex trade with basic evaluation, do greater than stay as much as date using the most up-to-date economic news, which is from time to time the perception. Getting a basic variety of trader suggests you study to Forex trade with some background understanding in economics. No, it doesn?t necessarily mean you need to possess a school degree. Basic fundamentals could be discovered from either household study programs or even short courses. Men and women with basic understanding possess a better understanding of how one particular economic scenario can have an effect on a particular country?s currency value. Based on the news they obtain and the understanding they know, they may be in a position to produce more educated guesses to base their (medium to long-term) trades on. It?s not better or worse than the technical day trading approach, it is just a various.

The difference involving these two kinds of traders and banks are, banks essentially have the finest of both worlds. These that function in the foreign exchange departments in main banks study to Forex trade working with technical evaluation and effectively as basic evaluation. However the banks use the technicals as short term evaluation to choose when to enter a position, rather a short term trade. Before putting the trade, the banks would have studied the currency trade. Besides working with fundamentals and economic news, they would also use economic data/charts to choose when the trade is viable long-term.

While people today have their preferences to which approach is finest for them, there is no doubt that the banks? approach has more possibility of obtaining it right. Men and women often disregard one particular approach over the other for various causes. This only robs them of important facts to spot excellent trades on, for that reason turning over more profit. So, study to Forex trade working with both technical evaluation and basic evaluation for the greatest probability of results in Forex trading.

Terrill, File)

(AP) ? Olympians should have figured out one thing by now: What they can or cannot wear at the London Games has very little to do with their fashion, marketing sense or patriotism, and a whole lot to do with rules, regulations and, of course, money.

The overseers of the Olympics are protective of their brand and rings ? considered one of the most recognizable logos in sports ? and what the athletes wear when they're competing has been tightly regulated, much to the chagrin of some of the games' stars.

Take Michael Phelps, for example. He recently tweeted his dismay at no longer being allowed to wear a swimming cap bearing miniature American flags on the front and back.

"Gotta love an organizing committee telling us we can't do that anymore," he said on Twitter.

But neither the International nor U.S. Olympic Committees are making any apologies. The IOC keeps a tight grip on when and where advertising and other markings can be worn at the games. After all, its coffers took in more than $2.4 billion (over the four-year period ending in 2008, for instance) in marketing rights from companies like McDonald's and Coca-Cola.

The USOC and the federations that run the individual sports follow suit, paying respect to domestic and international sponsors who more or less bankroll the entire endeavor, which, in turn, provides the funding for the athletes.

"Our objective," said USOC head Scott Blackmun, "is to be able to support as many athletes who have a chance to represent us at the Olympic Games."

Not satisfied with the support he receives, American runner Nick Symmonds resorted to selling body space earlier this year.

Symmonds, one of the most outspoken athletes on this issue, was paid $11,100 by a Wisconsin-based lifestyle marketing firm for wearing a tattoo of their logo on his shoulder. He'll need to cover it with tape at Olympics so he can conform to the IOC's detailed guidelines about logos, advertising and manufacturer identification.

"My No. 1 goal, aside from making the Olympic team and winning a medal, is to bring awareness to how many struggling athletes there are out there ? and wouldn't it be nice if we could just lift these regulations and allow athletes to pursue individual sponsorships a little more freely," Symmonds said in an interview earlier this year.

Not surprisingly, Symmonds was one of the first athletes to chime in last week when U.S. politicians called out the USOC for outfitting its athletes with Chinese-made uniforms produced by American-based manufacturer Ralph Lauren.

"Our Ralph Lauren outfits for the Olympic opening ceremonies were made in China. So, um, thanks China," Symmonds said in a tweet.

It was an embarrassment for both the apparel maker ? future uniforms will be USA-made ? and the USOC, which was careful to say it appreciates all sponsors ? even those who make clothes in China ? because it is a nonprofit that receives no government funding.

"The most important thing to remember is that, unlike professional leagues in the U.S., where you're trying to decide how much goes to owners and how much goes to athletes, in our environment, all the money goes to athletes," Blackmun said. "There are no owners putting money in their pockets. It's a completely nonprofit environment. It's a different environment than the marketing environment you see in pro leagues."

The U.S. uniforms aren't the only ones causing a stir. The Spanish team's garish red and yellow outfits ? designed by Russian firm Bosco ? haven't gone over well in Spain. Some Spanish athletes have posted tweets making fun of the gear.

The bottom line, though, is that national Olympic committees take the best deals they can get with the manufacturers.

Bosco, which also designed the Russian and Ukrainian uniforms, is providing the outfits for free in a deal with the Spanish Olympic Committee.

"When you measure the difference between paying 1.5 million of public money and free clothes, there is no discussion," committee president Alejandro Blanco said on Spanish TV.

About 85 percent of the money the USOC makes goes back to athletes in one form or another, some to fund training, some in payments to the organizations that run their sports and some in a prize fund that awards money for top finishers at the Olympics.

Some athletes, however, see big numbers being tossed around ? $4.38 billion for a TV deal with NBC, $13 million for a beer company's sponsorship package with the USOC ? and wonder why they can't get a little bigger piece of the pie.

Sanya Richards-Ross, one of America's top track stars, said in a recent Twitter posting, "This is my 3rd Olympics! Haven't been pd yet! Def not my motivation!!!"

"Also wanted to be clear that one of the major issues isn't just funding athletes through revenue earned at events like the Olympics," she said. "But also changing regulations to allow athletes to receive private sponsors and display logos on our jerseys."

The issue came up in a more high-profile context earlier this year when NBA stars Dwyane Wade and Ray Allen suggested Olympic athletes should be paid and Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban agreed.

"If you look up stupid in the dictionary you see a picture of the USA Dream Team playing for free for corporate America so the U.S. Olympic Committee can make billions of dollars," Cuban said. "So, if you come up with something that you own that you can give to me for free so I can make billions of dollars, I want it."

While NBA stars have lengthy and often lucrative sponsorship opportunities, the average American Olympian has a much narrower window for cashing in.

In April, 18 Olympians, including Eric Shanteau and Jessica Hardy, sued an Olympic sponsor, Samsung, that used their names and images in a promotion before getting permission. The USOC, which originally told athletes they had to opt out of the program, changed its policy and said they had to opt in. The USOC viewed the project as a chance to increase athlete exposure, while the athletes looked at it as another way the USOC was infringing upon their marketing rights.

"Their holier-than-thou attitude that the Olympics is their creation doesn't give them carte blanche to violate those who enjoy the opportunity to go," said Evan Morgenstein, an agent for some of those who filed the lawsuit and a consistent thorn in the side of the USOC and IOC. "They've created this opportunity for so many people. OK, so now you're going to take advantage of that? What kind of rationale is that?"

Of the 530 athletes who made the U.S. team, Morgenstein estimates only about 5 to 10 percent get direct contributions from Olympic sponsors. Some, then, go outside the Olympic family of sponsors, where athletes can market themselves, but with no references to the Olympics or its markings. Of course, when a viewer sees Phelps or gymnast Nastia Liukin on a Subway commercial, the connection is obvious, even without the Olympic rings.

The USOC calls this "Ambush Marketing," and says anything that devalues the Olympic brand hurts all athletes.

"I understand their frustration," Blackmun said. "But the answer is not to remove restrictions, because if we do, we can't support athletes collectively at the level we do today."

Morgenstein's response: "Of course it's ambush, because it's the only logical way for these athletes to get paid."

The athletes ? at least the few who are successful enough to make some money on the side ? understand what the Olympics has done for their careers. Still, they defend their right to make a living.

"It's my job at the end of the day, but at the same time, you have to remember that's not necessarily why you're doing it," said Liukin, the 2008 all-around gold medalist. "I'm doing it because I have a love for the sport. I think a lot of people can cross those two paths and get caught up in making as much money as they can. But for me, it's about having a well-rounded group of sponsors who support me and give me what I need to be at my best."

Feds: California nuclear plant didn't mislead regulators

In their report, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) found that?Southern?California?Edison had not mislead regulators about issues at their troubled San Onofre power plant, located between San Diego and Los Angeles, California.?

Federal regulators Thursday concluded that the operator of the San Onofre?nuclear power plant in?California?did not mislead the government about modifications to its troubled steam generators, where unusual damage has been found on scores of tubes that carry radioactive water.

    ' + google_ads[0].line2 + '

    '; } else if (google_ads.length > 1) { ad_unit += ''; } } document.getElementById("ad_unit").innerHTML += ad_unit; google_adnum += google_ads.length; return; } var google_adnum = 0; google_ad_client = "pub-6743622525202572"; google_ad_output = 'js'; google_max_num_ads = '1'; google_feedback = "on"; google_ad_type = "text"; google_adtest = "on"; google_image_size = '230x105'; google_skip = '0'; // -->

Environmental activists had accused Southern?California?Edison of duping the?Nuclear?Regulatory Commission about a series of changes to the massive machines before they began operating in 2010 and 2011, including boosting the number of tubes and redesigning internal supports that hold them in place.

The seaside plant between San Diego and Los Angeles has been idle since January, after a tube break in one of the generators released traces of radiation and set in motion a series of events that led to a federal probe.

In a report, investigators concluded that Edison "provided the NRC with all the information required under existing regulations about proposed design changes to its steam generators," according to a statement. Essentially, the agency staff found Edison complied with federal rules for replacing the generators ? yet ended up with machinery that operated so badly that tube damage at the twin-reactor plant has been called unprecedented.

A central question remains under study: Does the agency need to change the process that was used to approve the replacement generators? At issue is whether tubing problems that eventually sidelined the reactors might have been identified by changing rules under which utilities swap equipment at?nuclear?power plants.

For example, the report concluded that there were "major design changes" between the original and replacement generators at San Onofre, yet they qualified as essentially identical replacements that did not require an exhaustive review by the NRC.

After a three-month investigation, the NRC announced last month that a botched computer analysis resulted in design flaws that caused excessive vibration and resulted in heavy wear in many tubes. Edison has been trying to determine how, or if, the problems can be fixed.

The rules for replacing generators, as written, do not require Edison "to presume deficiencies in the design or fabrication" of the generators, the report said.

Daniel Hirsch, a lecturer on?nuclear?policy at the University of?California, Santa Cruz, who is a critic of thenuclear?power industry, said the agency was attempting to exonerate itself from blame for the plant's ongoing troubles.

The "NRC said they did nothing wrong" even though the faulty generators caused unprecedented tube damage and raised the risk of a serious accident, Hirsch said in a statement.

Summertime, and the marketing ain't easy | Women Unlimited

    starfis

Summer is here in the Northern Hemisphere, but it seems many of your potential clients are not. When you get the response ?I?ll be on holiday until?? one too many times, it?s easy to become discouraged about summertime marketing. But fear not, there?s plenty you can do to build your business in the summer months. Here?s ten cool marketing ideas for what to do while the weather is hot:

    1. Network with colleagues.

Many of your colleagues may be experiencing a slow time as well. This is the perfect opportunity to set up lunch, coffee, and phone dates to network with others who serve the same target market and build your referral base.

    2. Attend some events.

Look for networking opportunities in your local area that will allow you to make contact with folks in your niche. Summer calendars often include awards celebrations, fundraisers, golf tournaments, launch parties, expos, and other events with an element of fun.

    3. Take time for projects.

Tackle some of the important-but-not-urgent marketing projects you never seem to have time for. Update your ezine, revise your website copy, launch a blog, expand your social media networks, or implement a new contact management system.

    4. Book speaking gigs for autumn.

Associations, networking groups, and brown bag lunch programs are lining up speakers now for their autumn meetings. Compose descriptions of two or three topics that capture your expertise and reach out to program chairs, group leaders, and hosts.

    5. Write that book.

You?ve always wanted to write a book, right? Two slow months could give you plenty of time to write an ebook, workbook, white paper, case study, or other compilation of your words of wisdom. Not into writing? Record a series of audios or videos instead.

    6. Make a special offer.

Encourage clients to work with you now by offering an incentive. Discounts aren?t always the best choice for professionals, so consider get-acquainted offers like free consultations or demonstrations, and bonuses like extra sessions or add-on services.

    7. Reconnect with former clients.

It may not be the best time to connect with new prospects or get new projects started, but not everyone is on vacation. Take this opportunity to rekindle old relationships. Contact former clients by phone or email and find out what?s new in their world.

    8. Schedule now for September.

With the always-in-touch state of communications today, your prospects may still be connected even when out of the office or away from home. When you leave a message or send an email or text, suggest making an appointment for when they return.

    9. Take a class, read a book, make a plan.

Not sure what?s the best thing to do about marketing? This may be an excellent time to learn and strategize. Participate in a workshop or coaching group, read a marketing book, or create a customized marketing plan.

    10. Take time off yourself.

Remember that you deserve a break this summer, too. Be sure to schedule your own vacation time. Reconnect with family and friends, with nature, or with yourself. Building your business is always easier once you?re rested and restored.

Do you find summertime marketing more difficult than usual or do you relish the time to catch up with your planning? We?d love to hear how you deal with business in the summertime.?
